BANG THE DRUM SLOWLY
1973

Robert De Niro, Michael Moriarty,
Vincent Gardenia, Phil Foster

Henry Wiggen and Bruce Pearson are
members of the New York Mammoths
major league baseball team -
Author the star pitcher, Bruce the catcher
who never quite lived up to his potential -
friends, and roommates when they're
on the road. During the off season,
Bruce is diagnosed with a terminal case
of Hodgkin's disease. Author is the only
person on the team who knows of
Bruce's illness, with neither planning on
telling anyone. Author takes extraordinary
measures to ensure that he is playing ball
with Bruce during what will probably be
Bruce's final season before
he can no longer play.

HOFFMAN
1970

Peter Sellers, Sinéad Cusack

A businessman blackmails his attractive
young secretary into spending a weekend
with him. Though he's a creep throughout,
he gradually emerges as a sympathetic
character.

A New York Times critic once inveighed
against Hoffman's comment:
"It's not only homosexuals who don't like
women. Hardly anybody likes them."

Of course, that's Hoffman's line, a guy
who tells a woman he loves that women
are just fallopian tubes with teeth. The fact
he is so lost is part of the movie's comedy
and part of its tragedy at the same time.
"Hoffman" is like a valentine wrapped inside
a hand grenade just waiting to surprise you
with a seriously fulfilling rumination
on the riddle of love.

drifts in a raft to Tuasiva Island, where he

the only person on the island, having been
left behind when seeking out a priest. The nun
and the marine are stranded, but the island
offers a bountiful supply of food. However,

their paradisiacal life ends when the
Japanese arrive to build a base, forcing
"Mr." Allison and the nun to hide in a cave.
The marine's expertise in such conditions
proves to be vital to their survival,
and the two grow ever closer.

Maverick
Benefit of the doubt
Robert Colbert as Brett Maverick

So who has the money or, as it turns out,
who's pulling the strings behind the money
grab. Brent Maverick (Robert Colbert)
doesn't have much to do, except hold his
arm and watch others maneuver
for the stolen 40 thousand. The episode
starts out with a bang and gets really
interesting when the sheriff decides he
should have the loot instead of the mail office
robbers. However, things soon get really
complicated, so you may need a score
card to keep up with the many twists,
Good story.

The Maverick boys - Bret, Bart, Beau and Brent -
are a clan of well-dressed dandies,
gamblers who'd much rather make their money playing cards
than messing up their fine clothing with actual work. Sly and clever,
none of the Mavericks are much for acts of daring do,
but they can be courageous when
the situation calls for it.
Most often, however, they live by their wits and considerable charm.
